Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Multicultural events are platforms that celebrate diversity by bringing together people from various cultural backgrounds to share their traditions, arts, and values. In Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, such events are becoming increasingly common, reflecting the area's rich cultural diversity. However, managing cultural sensitivities in these events is a complex task, requiring a deep understanding of the beliefs, norms, and values of different cultural groups. Mismanagement can lead to conflicts, miscommunication, or even the alienation of participants. According to Abdullahi and Ibrahim (2024), successful multicultural event management depends on inclusivity, cultural competence, and effective communication strategies. Despite the growing importance of multicultural events in promoting unity and cultural exchange, event organizers in Bauchi face significant challenges in addressing cultural sensitivities. This study evaluates these challenges, exploring their implications for event planning and providing strategies for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Managing cultural sensitivities in multicultural events in Bauchi is a challenging endeavor due to factors such as language barriers, differing cultural norms, and potential biases among participants. These challenges can hinder the success of events, leading to misunderstandings or reduced participation. While previous studies have highlighted the importance of cultural competence in event management, there is limited research on the specific challenges faced in managing cultural sensitivities in Bauchi (Yusuf & Suleiman, 2023). This gap in research limits the ability of event organizers to develop effective strategies for addressing cultural sensitivities. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the challenges of managing cultural sensitivities in multicultural events in Bauchi Local Government Area.
